A New and Unique Ensemble
The Yellowstone Chamber Orchestra is a new ensemble that is comprised of outstanding young string players from all over Southeast Idaho and Western Wyoming. These musicians have shown a high level of dedication as musicians and strong character as people. The purpose of this orchestra is to provide these dedicated students with solo and ensemble performance opportunities, a setting in which they can continue to develop their skills, and opportunities to serve each other and the communities in which they live.
The Yellowstone Chamber Orchestra is set up in a unique way that helps the students build critical skills to help them prepare for college and the future. The members of the orchestra take turns as section leaders, and support each other as they play concertos and other solo literature. Because they only rehearse three times before each concert, they learn to work efficiently as they prepare real music by real composers. Directors Brian Ashton and Richard Ferguson, co-founders of the Mountains & Strings Chamber Music Retreat, use their combined experience to teach, motivate, and prepare the orchestra members during the most developmentally critical years of their lives. Their goal is to pass on their outstanding leadership to the students so they can go out into the world with a strong foundation of good values, dedication to excellence, and an attitude of service.
